FIFA banned Botafogo from signing up new players in the next three transfer windows, due to a debt owed to Atlanta United of more than 17 million euros relating to the signing of Thiago Almada in 2024. Botafogo, led by investor John Textor, has already started talks with the North American club to try to find a solution to the problem, given that it does not currently have the financial resources to pay off the debt in full. Increased problems for Martín Anselmi, the team's new coach, who could see the work of building the squad for the new season seriously compromised. So far, Botafogo has agreed the signings of Lucas Villaba (ex-Nacional Montevideo) and Riquelme (ex-Sport), but may be unable to register the two players if they are unable to raise the Transfer Ban.
