Fernando Mamede, one of the great names in the history of Portuguese athletics, died this Tuesday, aged 74. «It is with deep regret that we inform and mourn the passing of Fernando Mamede, a unique figure whose career was marked by excellence and dedication. Fernando Mamede held the world record for 10,000 meters for more than a decade, a feat he achieved on July 2, 1984, in Stockholm. Specialist in long distance events, he participated in three editions of the Olympic Games (Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984) and many other European Games and also accumulated 27 national records.
