Brest – 11th in the French championship – was eliminated from the Cup on their visit to Avranches, emblem of the fourth division (1-1, 5-4 after penalties). On Friday night, in the “32-avos”, striker Mama Baldé (ex-Sporting and Desp. Aves) was a total player for the visitors.
In a stop-and-go match, generally balanced, Brest were left without a penalty in the 21st minute, due to the expulsion of central defender Le Cardinal. Shortly after, in the 24th minute, striker Sabihi put Avranches ahead. In response, at 34m, winger Labeau-Lascary restored equality.
In the final shootout, Avranches converted all five penalties, while Brest saw striker Del Castillo miss the first shot.
Thus, Avranches – ranked eighth in the French fourth division – keeps alive the dream of at least equaling the historic 2017 campaign, when they reached the “quarters” of the Cup, being eliminated by PSG.
