The American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, one of the greatest figures in world athletics and Olympic championwas arrested on January 29, 2026 in Orange County, Florida, after being detained for driving at a speed exceeding 160 km/h on a highway near the city of Orlando.

According to local authorities, Richardson was intercepted by police after being detected traveling at a speed considered “excessive and dangerous”, allegedly carrying out reckless maneuvers when changing lanes when overtaking other vehicles. The incident led to her immediate arrest and subsequent transfer to the county jail, where she was booked with her usual mugshot at the police station.

The 25-year-old athlete paid $500 bail and was released the same day. According to specialized media, the American sprinter is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks, where it will be determined whether she will face additional sanctions, which could include fines, license suspension or lesser charges, depending on the judge’s decision.

An endless list of problems with the law

This speeding arrest is just one of the many extra-sporting episodes that have marked Richardson’s public career in recent years.

In July 2025, the sprinter was detained at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after an altercation with her then partner, fellow athlete Christian Coleman. The incident, captured on security cameras, led to an initial charge of fourth-degree domestic violence, although Coleman decided not to file formal charges. Richardson spent a night in custody and later issued a public apology for what happened.
