União de Leiria, whose football team competes in the II League, lamented “the devastating impacts” of the Kristin depression, assuming that all sporting activity was severely affected by the destruction. The club was even forced to postpone the meeting with Paços de Ferreira, scheduled for February 1st, after the Estádio Municipal Dr. Magalhães Pessoa suffered serious structural damage. «Despite being municipal and not representing a direct loss to the club and SAD, it makes it impossible for staff to return to work and play games at home», point out those responsible. The Bidoeira Training Center, approximately 18 kilometers from Leiria, where the team usually trains, «was destroyed», with «extensive damage to infrastructure» and «damage to several specialized equipment». Without camps, the team has been trying to return to training, «albeit partially», through «a special internship in Lisbon, to welcome all the players on the squad and their direct families who had no alternative». In the last week and a half, the team led by Fábio Pereira trained at Cidade do Futebol, in Oeiras, provided by the Portuguese Football Federation, and also at Sporting's training center and at Alverca's facilities. With some conditions reestablished in Bidoeira, this week attempts are made to return, «a particularly difficult task due to the multiple existing constraints», including «the lack of electricity». Meanwhile, the Portuguese Professional Football League announced that União de Leiria-FC Porto B, from the 22nd round of the II League, will be played, on Sunday, in Estoril, due to the damage to the Leiria stadium. The change represents «an additional indirect expense, in addition to the clear disadvantage for the team and for unionist members and fans», recognizes the Leiriense club, in the statement. The impact of bad weather also affects grassroots football, with serious damage to the Academia União de Leiria, in Santa Eufémia. «The most difficult thing to recover will be the entire field lighting system», which prevents «any prediction for the resumption of training». The only activity reactivated is women's football and training teams in national championships - under-23, juniors, youth and beginners. A challenge that involves “daily difficulties”, resorting to borrowed or rented pitches and postponements or reversal of matchdays, to always play away. In the remaining modalities, «futsal sees its season seriously compromised», with the destruction of the Pavilion of Partners, while basketball is experiencing «weeks of great uncertainty», because the three pavilions used are closed for an indefinite period. In the released note, União de Leiria emphasizes that it is «far from being an isolated case», because «the entire region was hit hard by the Kristin depression», with «devastating impacts on communities, companies, partners, institutions and the associative and sports movement». «Many clubs, colleagues and local sports agents face high losses and, in some cases, situations of true tragedy», lament the Union leaders, highlighting that the moment «requires unity, solidarity and a collective effort».
