One of the most talked about topics since the beginning of this new year of 2026 was, without a doubt, the change that all workers in our country noticed on their January payrolls. We are talking about the application of Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI)a contribution that represents a loss of a considerable amount of money per year on payrolls.
I was talking about the same thing on social media. Andrés Millanbetter known on Instagram or TikTok as @lawtips, who can be proud of being the lawyer with the most followers on social media in our country. In the video in question, Millán made reference to the MEI and explained the reason why we should take this into consideration although it may seem that what they ‘take’ from us is little.

“This month you have already earned less than the previous one thanks to the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI)which is a contribution that does not give the right to any future direct consideration and, therefore, is a tax. Those of us who studied law know that It makes more sense to call contributions taxes than contributions taxes“, commented the lawyer.
“And we also know how to interpret the law and see how, year by year, the MEI rises and lasts until the year 2050. And we see how in 2025 it was 0.8% and now it is 0.9%. An average salary, which according to INE is 28 thousand euros, represents 250 euros per year. ‘What are you saying, man? If 0.75% is paid by the company and the worker only pays 0.15%. It’s four dollars.’ Then, If what the company pays doesn’t affect the worker in any way, why don’t we force the company to pay 50%?“Millán proposed.

“Of course it does, because salary is a complete negotiation of all concepts between employer and worker. And in the long run, in one way or another, it will end up affecting you. don’t increase your salary so much in the future“, said the content creator in the TikTok video.

“S The minimum wage is around 150 euros per year.. That is why between this plus the non-deductibility of the IRS, plus the non-updating of personal and family minimums, Working is actually more discouraging than making money selling real estatefunds, gold or much less winning the lottery, which is what pays the least taxes of all this.
