The districts of Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu will be under red warning due to possible snowfall from midnight on Friday, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). According to the organization, the red warning (the most serious), which lasts until at least 9 am on Saturday, is due to the possibility of snowfall above 600/800 meters, with accumulation of around 20 to 30 centimeters above 800 meters and possible ice formation. The institute warns of possible serious disruptions to circulation and the impact of some local supplies. These are some of the effects of the passage of depression Ingrid through mainland Portugal, which began to be felt from this Thursday afternoon, with the IPMA issuing several warnings of rain, wind, snow and sea disturbances. Also because of the snow, Coimbra, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Guarda and Bragança are under orange warning (the second most serious). In total, the IPMA placed under yellow warning due to rain, sometimes heavy, the districts of Lisbon, Leiria and Coimbra between 3pm and 6pm this Thursday and Viseu, Évora, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Braga between 3pm and 9pm. Waves can reach 15 meters high The districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under red warning on Saturday, mainly due to maritime unrest. The most serious level of the IPMA will be in force between 3:00 am and 7:00 pm on Saturday, due to the forecast of “northwest waves with a significant height of 7 to 9 meters, reaching a maximum height of 15 meters”, along the entire western coast. The same districts are already under orange warning and Faro (on the west coast), Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja are already under yellow warning due to the state of the sea. The IPMA also issued a yellow warning due to the wind in several districts, some starting on Thursday night. This notice covers, at different periods, Braga, Coimbra, Beja, Leiria, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal, Faro and Porto. The north and south coasts of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo are also under yellow warning due to maritime unrest, then turning to orange between Friday and Sunday. The red warning is the most serious and is issued whenever there are extreme situations, orange is issued by IPMA whenever there is a meteorological situation of moderate to high risk and yellow when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation. In view of these conditions, the National Maritime Authority and the Portuguese Navy recommend, especially to the fishing and recreational boating community that is at sea, the return to the nearest port of shelter and the adoption of precautionary measures. For the general population, they advise against taking walks along the coastline and beaches, as well as engaging in activities in areas exposed to sea disturbances or affected by surf.
