The long-standing frauds at Banco Master —highlighted by the financial market and the Public Prosecutor's Office—, which resulted in its liquidation in November by the Central Bank, mark yet another in the series of scandals with which we have become accustomed to living. This case, however, exhibits a peculiarity: as or more scandalous than the frauds of the controller, Daniel Vorcaro, is the protection network formed to contest the decision of the monetary authority. The reasons are still obscure, but the objective was translated into the words of former BC president Armínio Fraga: "There are a lot of people wanting to bake a pizza the size of Maracanã", he said in interview with O Estado de S. Paulo last Tuesday (6). Suspicion fully justified by the movements in the underground of power where Vorcaro built a web of relationships that, in his opinion, would allow him to carry out his business with security and exhibitionism through the terrain of profitable deception. There are hidden individuals working to somehow alleviate the situation, which is not surprising, and whose modus operandi the then senator Romero Jucá explained in the idea of "stopping the bleeding" through agreements "with the Supreme Court, with everything". He spoke with knowledge of the facts about the possibility of nullifying the consequences of the Lava Jato operation. He got it right and, apparently, he spread the methodology that has now been perfected with the aim of not letting the bleeding take hold. The unfortunate news here is to see the Federal Supreme Court and the Federal Audit Court dragged into the field of suspicion due to collusion, through individual decisions by ministers Dias Toffoli, at the STF, and Jhonatan de Jesus, at the TCU. Both had to retreat from measures that were more damaging to the image of the institutions, but crossing the line of institutional composure is a given and cannot be fixed. Unless the bodies in these bodies abandon their corporatist modesty and clearly place themselves in opposition to tortoises that, we know, only climb trees through the hands of people.
