FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the «deplorable scenes» that occurred during the final of the African Cup of Nations (CAN)namely the moment Senegal left the pitch. “We strongly condemn the behavior (...) of some players and members of the Senegal technical team. It is unacceptable to leave the playing field in that way and violence will not be tolerated in our sport", said the FIFA president, in a statement. Part of the Senegal delegation, which beat Morocco 1-0 (after extra time), even left the pitch, in protest at a decision by the referee, who awarded a penalty in favor of the Moroccans during added time and, minutes before, had interrupted a play that would have resulted in a goal for the Senegalese. Brahim Díaz would miss the penalty and, in extra time, Pape Gueye scored the goal that guaranteed Senegal's triumph. «The deplorable scenes we witnessed yesterday [domingo] they must be condemned, so that they do not happen again", warned Infantino, who called on the disciplinary bodies of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to "take appropriate measures".
