THE BALL presented the FIGURE OF THE YEAR award to Vitinha, a PSG and National Team player. This is the 22nd edition of the award, which recognizes the personality who stood out the most in the previous 12 months. The first winner, in 2004, was José Mourinho. The Portuguese coach would repeat the feat in 2010, shortly after winning the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup with Italian side Inter. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, in 2006 and 2013, after winning the second Ballon d'Or, and Fernando Santos, in 2015 and 2016, after winning the European Championship, repeated the feat. Bernardo Silva received the 2023 trophy in Manchester and Gyokeres the 2024 trophy. Nuno Gomes (2005), Ricardo Quaresma (2007), Nélson Évora (2008), Jorge Mendes (2009), Paulo Bento (2011), Pedro Proença (2012), Jorge Jesus (2014), Fernando Gomes (2017), Sérgio Conceição (2018), Bruno Lage (2019), Miguel Oliveira (2020), Ruben Amorim (2021) and Rui Costa (2022) were the other Portuguese sports personalities distinguished.
