The issue that captured all the media attention this week was, without a doubt, the fight between the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, and the CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov. The latter sent a message to all users of its application in Spain warning about what, in its opinion, was an attack on freedom of expression by the Spanish Executive.
Sánchez already responded online immediately after the letter was sent en masse. But He did it again in a more extensive way this Friday, February 6. With a video on his official Twitter profile, the President of the Government explained one by one the measures that will be approved to limit access to social networks in our country. And he relentlessly attacked Durov.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov
“This week something unprecedented happened in the history of our democracies. A techno-oligarch hacked the phones of millions of Spanish citizens to tell them what they think. This is a clear example of the abuses, of the interference that we are trying to combat”, Sánchez began by saying in the statement.
“Social networks, unfortunately, They have become a kind of Wild West, a failed state. Applications like this host thousands of channels dedicated to criminal activities, pornography, violence… And not only that”, continued the President of the Government in the video.

“We saw how Artificial intelligence is being used by these apps to create fake nudeseven minors. How they spy on us, how they steal our data and how Platforms thrive by amplifying hate and misinformation“added Pedro Sánchez in the statement.
“That’s why, When democracies begin to bring order, their owners get nervous. A few days ago we launched 5 measures to protect minors and end impunity in digital environments. The first is that we will work together with the Public Ministry so that investigate possible crimes committed on social mediaespecially those that affect minors”, he noted.

“The second is that the manipulation of algorithms that use personal data must be and will be prosecuted by law. The third is that this technological caste of companies will face criminal liability if they refuse to remove illegal content of their networks”, listed the PSOE leader shortly afterwards.
“The fourth is that Let’s create the first Trace of Hate and Polarizationwhich will allow us to quantify and demonstrate how digital platforms fuel division and hate. Lastly, we will protect those most vulnerable to toxic content, limiting access to children under 16“, recalled Pedro Sánchez.
“We know that this technological caste has more money and even more power than many countriesbut our determination is stronger than your pockets. Therefore, we will move forward despite your threats”, announced the President of the Government, a phrase he already said a few days ago during the announcement of these measures.
