Despite his short stature and not being a striker, Gonçalo Moreira has been great when it comes to his goalscoring ability for Benfica's youth team. The number ten scored another goal this Wednesday, in the victory over Slavia Prague, by 3-2. Moreira has, in total, 12 goals between this season and the previous one playing for Benfica in the Youth League. He scored his eighth goal of the season, just behind Ajax striker Emre Unuvar's nine goals. With this goal, Gonçalo Moreira 'breaks away' from ex-Benfica players Zé Gomes and Diogo Gonçalves on the list of the best scorers ever in the competition. Both scored 11 goals. Thus, Maiato is the best Portuguese scorer since the beginning of the Youth League, in 2013. In the last season in which he can play in the Youth League (he is 20 years old), Moreira is three goals away from the best scorers of all time - Charlie Brown (ex-Chelsea), Borja Mayoral (ex-Real Madrid) and Roberto Núñez (ex-Atlético Madrid). Benfica qualified for the round of 16 of the competition. He won the Youth League once, in 2022, with Luís Castro as coach.
