<br><br><div data-v-232111b4="" data-v-b8dc8ecb=""><!----><h3 class="bullet mt-0" data-v-232111b4="">What could happen to Brazilian biomes</h3><!----><p class="bullet" data-v-232111b4="">The Amazon is going through a critical moment. In the entire southern region of the basin, from the Atlantic Ocean to Bolivia, the dry season became 4 to 5 weeks longer in the period of 40 to 45 years, becoming one week longer per decade. It is also 20% to 30% drier and between 2ºC and 3°C warmer. In the southeast of the basin, the forest has become a source of carbon, indicating that it is very close to the point of no return.</p><p class="bullet" data-v-232111b4="">The forest has already lost part of its ability to recycle its own rain. This weakened the "flying rivers" that supply water to the Cerrado, the Pantanal and a significant part of the Atlantic Forest. If this trend continues, the Amazon could lose its ability to remain humid and biodiverse, compromising the supply of ecosystem services linked to agricultural activities and the health of the Brazilian people.</p><p class="bullet" data-v-232111b4="">In the Cerrado, temperatures rise faster than the global average, already exceeding 2°C. Between 1990 and 2020, an area of 230 thousand km² in the east of the biome close to the Caatinga began to have a drier and hotter climate, with characteristics typical of semi-arid regions. Between 2008 and 2023, the biome lost more than 150 thousand km² of native vegetation. If warming and deforestation persist, the Cerrado could no longer be the most biodiverse tropical savannah on the planet, with water and ecological impacts that threaten the region's food security.</p><p class="bullet" data-v-232111b4="">The Caatinga is going through a gradual process of aridity expansion. In other words, the Caatinga is getting drier. In the north of Bahia, close to the border with Pernambuco, global warming gave rise to the first arid zone in Brazil, a process that took place over the last 30 years. If this trend continues, the advance of aridity could cause massive population displacement, forcing millions of people from the Northeast to leave their homes, generating vulnerability, conflicts over resources and cultural losses.</p><!----><p class="bullet" data-v-232111b4="">The Pantanal has entered a climate risk zone. Dams, dredging, channel straightening and deforestation reduce water infiltration and alter the natural dynamics of floods. The biome records an increase in maximum temperature of 0.76°C per decade and, since 2019, rainfall has been 32% below the historical average. Furthermore, the surface of permanently flooded areas fell by 68% in 2023 in relation to the average from 1985 to 2023. If this trend persists, the Pantanal could cross a hydrological point of no return, compromising the reproduction of aquatic life, the regeneration of vegetation and activities such as fishing, tourism and the subsistence of local communities.</p><!----><!----></div>
